The Maltese Falcon By Dashiell Hammett (1894 - 1961) Essays
The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett (1894 - 1961) The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett (1894 - 1961) Type of Work: Detective mystery novel Setting San Francisco; 1920s Principal Characters Sam Spade, a young hard-boiled detective Miles Archer, Spade's older partner Brigid O'Shaughnessy, a beautiful young woman (alias Miss Wonderly) Joel Cairo, an effeminate gangster-type Casper Gutman, a rotund, older man Iva Archer, Archer's wife and Spade's mistress Story Overveiw Effie Perine, secretary to private detective Sam Spade, opened his door to announce that a client, Miss Wonderly, was there to see him. A stunning young woman entered and shyly took a seat. She stammered and bit her lip as she tried to relate her story. Finally the detective assured her it would be best to begin at the beginning. Miss Wonderly said that she was concerned for her seventeen-year-old sister, who had run off with an older man named Thursby. She had arranged a meeting with Thursby for that evening, and now wanted to hire a detective to follow him from the meeting - straight to her sister, she hoped. Spade gave his partner, Miles Archer, the details of Miss Wonderly's case. She paid them two hundred dollars, and left with the agreement that Archer would tail Thursby that evening. That night Spade was awakened by a phone call: Archer had been murdered. Spaae rushed to the scene. According to the police ' Archer was shot with a British-made Webley revolver. Spade phoned his secretary and asked her to call Iva, his partner's wife, to break the bad news. Then he returned to his apartment. Sam had just "drunk his third glass Of Bicardi and was lighting his fifth cigarette" when the doorbell rang. It was the police; Lieutenants Dundy and Polhaus wanted to question Sam about the death of yet another man. Thursby, it turned out, had been shot outside his hotel shortly after Spade left the Archer murder scene. Considering the circumstances of Archer's death, the police reasoned Spade must have shot Thursby out of revenge. However, Spade refused to give the cops any information about the case. The next morning the detective had a visitor waiting for him at his office. Effie had tried to keep Iva Archer away, but she had come anyway. Sam was unhappy to see Iva, but still he kissed her. Then Iva asked him point-blank if he had shot her husband so he could marry her. Spade laughed and shook his head. After Iva had left, Spade took a taxi to the hotel where Miss Wonderly was staying, only to find that she had mysteriously checked out, leaving no forwarding address. Back at the office, Effie informed her boss that Miss Wonderly had called to ask him to meet her at a new hotel. Arriving at the hotel, "Miss Wonderly" confessed that her real name was Brigid O'Shaughnessy and that her story the day before was just that - "all a story." Spade also admitted that neither he nor Archer had bought her tale, but had indeed "believed the two hundred dollars." Brigid explained that she could not reveal the complete story of why Spade had been hired, but did say that she had earlier met Thursby in Hong Kong and feared that he would betray her. Then she announced that Tliursby had been Archer's killer; he had shot Archer with the Webley he kept in his overcoat. Sam agreed to continue working on the case. When Spade returned to his office, a gangster, Joel Cairo, was waiting to ask about the connection between the two murders. He confessed his interest was more than mere curiosity; it seemed that Cairo was searching for a missing black metallic bird - a falcon - and that, in some way, Thursby had been connected with the falcon's disappearance. Cairo was prepared to pav five thousand dollars for the statuette's return. Spade told him that when lie could get his hands on the bird, Cairo would be contacted. That evening, as Spade left his apartment to meet Brigid, he noticed a young punk following him. Spade quickly lost the tail and went to Brigid's hotel. Brigid became visibly upset on hearing of Cairo and the money he had offered for the "bird"; she believed that Spade intended to double-cross her, and before she would tell him anything more than what lie already knew, she would have to speak with Cairo herself. They decided to meet with the two-bit thug later that night at Sam's apartment. There, Brigid admitted that though she had no idea why the falcon was so important, she did know where it was hidden. But they would have to wait a

5 Study Tips to Improve Your SAT Weaknesses
Youââ¬â¢re a pro at one section of the SAT, but you just canââ¬â¢t seem to nudge your score up in the other. à How can you develop skills to master weak areas? Read on for five tips for improving your SAT weaknesses. You canââ¬â¢t measure improvement or hone weak areas if you donââ¬â¢t know where youââ¬â¢re starting. Take a diagnostic test to find out where you are. ââ¬â¢s diagnostic test identifies specific strengths and weaknesses within each skill set and area the test measures. The PSAT can also give you an early indication of where you should focus your efforts. When you receive your score report, youââ¬â¢ll not only be able to view your overall scores for each section, but youââ¬â¢ll also see sub-scores for individual skills: Command of Evidence, Words in Context, Expression of Ideas, Standard English Conventions, Heart of Algebra, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, and Passport to Advanced Math. That way, youââ¬â¢ll be able to know if, say, problem solving was the specific weakness that contributed to a lower score in the Math section, and recognize that thatââ¬â¢s where you should focus your attention. To better understand your PSAT scores, read What Does My PSAT Score Mean? . Remember that the PSAT doesnââ¬â¢t necessarily correlate to your future performance on the SAT. Youââ¬â¢ll take more classes and expand your breadth of knowledge before you take the SAT; the PSAT can serve as an indication of what you should aim to improve before the actual test. Taking a diagnostic test early gives you time to prepare and retake the test if you need to. As you take more practice tests, youââ¬â¢ll become more familiar with the layout of the test. If you start preparing later, some of the aspects and feature of the test might trip you up, since you wonââ¬â¢t be as used to them. Starting early means youââ¬â¢ll gain the ability to work within time constraints, understand the structure, and become familiar with the skills you need to master to conquer individual sections. For instance, the Reading section requires strong critical thinking skills, vocabulary, and ability to use context clues to determine the meaning of a passage. As you read more passages on practice tests, youââ¬â¢ll become adept at knowing how to deconstruct the text and pulling out important information. Youââ¬â¢ll also gain insight into your own habits and the mistakes you routinely make. When practicing and scoring, pay attention to the types of questions you routinely get wrong. For instance, perhaps youââ¬â¢re not reading word problems on the Math section carefully enough. Missing key words because youââ¬â¢re rushing can mean the difference between a correct and incorrect answer. After enough practice, youââ¬â¢ll know what mistakes to be on the lookout for as you check your work. Our students see an average increase of 250 points on their SAT scores. Once you know your weak areas, develop creative ways to hone your skills. For example, using apps are a great way to practice, and you can focus on specific types of questions. Khan Academy, Daily Practice from College Board, and The Official SAT Question of the Day are some great apps to use. Are you having trouble with particular math problems and wasting time flipping back and forth to the formulas page? Institute a ââ¬Å"formula of the dayâ⬠policy, focusing on a specific formula to memorize each day. Or, if vocabulary is an issue, have a ââ¬Å"word of the dayâ⬠to memorize. Study with friendsââ¬âif youââ¬â¢re each stronger in different areas, you can share strategies to help each other master weaker areas. Time management is key to doing well on the SAT. Understanding the components of the test and how much time youââ¬â¢re allotted for each part will help you prepare. Components include: Reading: 52 multiple-choice questions, 65 minutes. Writing and Language: 44 multiple-choice questions, 25 minutes Mathââ¬âNo Calculator: 15 multiple-choice questions, 25 minutes Mathââ¬âWith Calculator section: 55 minutes, 30 multiple-choice questions and 8 grid-in questions Tip: Break down your time as follows For more tips on planning out how much time to spend on each section on the SAT, check out How to Pace Yourself on Every Section of the SAT. When studying, simulate this testing environment at least a few times so you can practice working within the time constraints. Tutors can help you develop competencies in weaker areas. Since they know the test, they know what itââ¬â¢s measuringââ¬âand what you need to do to improve. They can also provide resources and materials such as practice tests to help you study.

INTRODUCTION, ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION and CONCLUSIONS AND Essay
INTRODUCTION, ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION and CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS - Essay Example It gives a clearly structure for the enquiry and help me to stay within a defined set of limits. This methodology provides the scheme for sampling, data collection, data analysis and explanation of findings for the research. For the sake of providing the best understanding, it will be appropriate to summarize important elements of the research to make the research methodology meaningful. Silverman, (2004) states that qualitative methods are meant to provide an observation of social phenomenon from a close analysis of facts and trends with a critical review of information to provide an opinion by me This means that qualitative research methods are mainly concerned with the assessment of social events with a view of making critical conclusion . However, Marshall and Rossman (2010) identify qualitative research as a field of enquiry that cuts across disciplines and fields and examines key concepts. Which means it is theoretical and does not really seem to be related to figures. On the other hand quantitative research focuses on figures and trends to provide ideas from experimental studies (Silverman, 2004). This is different from qualitative research which is more theories and ideas. In this research, the primary approach would be more theoretical, making it more of a qualitative research. It would examine patterns and trends in peoples perception towards Art Education at the secondary school level in both Iraq and the UK. Within the findings there would be some elements of statistical analysis to provide a pattern and tone that is quantitative in nature. Sampling is an important element for the study of a representative body to acquire information about a subject that can be generalised over a wider population (Dodds, 2011). In order to understand each of the four objectives, there will be the need to study a carefully selected proportion of the population to come up with findings that would be

Opinion Editorial (Op Ed article) on how oil production affects the Essay
Opinion Editorial (Op Ed article) on how oil production affects the society behavoirs and manners in the producer contry - in ku - Essay Example Kuwaitisââ¬â¢ yearly income per individual is around $40,000 to more than $100,000, which is considered high. Citizens do not worry about taxes, employment, health care, and education. People can afford to not work and this has adverse effects on our values and behaviors. Kuwaitis expect money without working hard for it. In addition, they would rather work in public sector that can assure them high salaries with much less effort than the private sector. This weakens the private sector business in Kuwait. Mr. Mohammad Al-Sanousi, former minister of Information, said in an interview, he laid off around 600 employees who do not even come to work. He also said, they constitute a heavy burden on governmentââ¬â¢s budget. Citizens become more interested in prestigious jobs, so that Kuwait is forced to import foreign workers to fill the gap in the labor force. In the end, Kuwait will find itself with unbalanced economical situation. Certainly, there are those ambitious Kuwaitis who wo rk hard and do care about Kuwaitââ¬â¢s economy. Their efforts are not enough if the government is not doing its part.

Kate Chopins The Story of an Hour Essay -- Kate Chopin Story Hour Ess
Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" In ââ¬Å"The Story of an Hourâ⬠by Kate Chopin, the author depicts how someone can be trapped in an unproductive and unsatisfying reality because of otherââ¬â¢s thoughtlessness, exploitation, and domination. When combined with the contemporary societyââ¬â¢s belief, presumably the later half of the 19th century, a further understanding of Chopinââ¬â¢s thoughts and feelings can be realized. Mrs. Louise Mallard, the victim and messenger of this story, is the image of such a person. Her relationship with her husband is so oppressive and limiting that even death is considered a reasonable means of escape. The condition of life for Mrs. Mallard is terrible, yet for some reason she doesnââ¬â¢t seem to come to the full realization until her husband death. This leads one to believe that was a common place for women to be unhappy in their marriage and have no conventional means of escape (divorce). However, Chopin doesnââ¬â¢t directly make that point. Many women are in se arch of freedom from their marriage and they believe the only way to be free is to experience the death of their husband. Mrs. Louise Mallard is a repressed married woman that has a heart condition and the reaction to her husbandââ¬â¢s presumed death is a sign that she is unhappy. After hearing the tragic news she goes up stairs and looks out an open window and notices ââ¬Å"new spring lifeâ⬠, the delicious breath of rainâ⬠, and ââ¬Å" countless sparrows tittering in the eaves.â⬠As she looks out the window among th...
